Fatality Free Friday 2009 Convoy - THE Fatality Free Friday road safety message took to the road on Friday, 22 May 2009 with a celebrity convoy from the Gold Coast to Brisbane. Escorted by the Queensland Police and Fire and Rescue Service, the celebrity event included Supercheap Autos V8 Supercar driver Russell Ingall, Olympic gold medallist Natalie Cook and Gold Coast Titan Michael Henderson. After being farewelled from Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast by the Hollywood Stunt Drivers, the convoy stopped at St Stephen’s College at Upper Coomera where founder Russell White, Michael Henderson and Sergeant Doc Newman from Queensland Police talked to the school about the importance of having the right mental attitude. The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service’s Vaughn Ottaway demonstrated the follow on effect of road trauma by getting the St Stephen’s students to play the roles of crash victims, their families, the emergency services team and medical teams. “For every person who is involved in a serious crash, there are many, many others who are affected – it’s never just one,” he said. “You family and friends will be traumatised but make no mistake, every time we have to attend a scene and when medical staff have to treat people, we too are affected by what we see as well. “You can ask any emergency services personnel to recall the worst thing they’ve seen and they will remember just like it happened yesterday.” Australian champion beach volleyball player Natalie Cook joined the convoy at Isuzu D-Max dealer Keema Motors, Springwood, before the group headed to its final destination at Brisbane’s Reddacliff Place for a lunchtime display of fire trucks, the latest Queensland Highway Patrol car and the Fatality Free Friday Isuzu D-Max Utes.
