Fatality Free Friday 2010 'Empty Shoes' Display in Brisbane
Dozens of volunteers worked from before dawn to prepare the Fatality Free Friday ‘empty shoes’ display at Brisbane’s Reddacliff Place.
More than 1500 pairs of shoes, representing the lives of men, women and children cut short through road crashes in Australia last year, provided a graphic reminder of the human cost of road trauma.
Teams from 4BC, Suncorp Insurance, Armor All, Isuzu Ute, Monroe, DriverSafety.com.au, Business Communications Management and Olpac joined members of the Queensland Police Service and the motorcycle association MATES to encourage Fatality Free Friday pledge signings and explaining the Fatality Free Friday message.
4BC morning announcer Greg Cary broadcast live from Reddacliff Place from 9am until noon.
Showing their support for Australia’s only national community-based road safety initiative was Queensland Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts and Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson who both spoke on the importance of personal responsibility behind the wheel.
More than 500 people put pen to paper to sign the Fatality Free Friday pledge on the day with many more heading back to the office to take the pledge online.
Fatality Free Friday founder Russell White spent the day conducting back to back interviews with media across the country.
