Fatality Free Friday 2010

From one end of the country to the other, community organisations used Fatality Free Friday to encourage better and safer driving on Australia’s roads.

There were only two road fatalities in Australia on the day - the best result since Fatality Free Friday was founded in 2007.

Major events were held in Townsville, Brisbane and Melbourne as well as community displays and road safety presentations in other parts of the country.

In Brisbane and Melbourne, Fatality Free Friday was marked with a striking ‘empty shoes’ display. At each location 1500 pairs of shoes were put on display representing the number of men, women and children killed on Australia’s roads nationally.

The visually striking display puts a human face on the road toll statistics.

Passersby in Federation Square, Melbourne and Reddacliff Place, Brisbane were encouraged to sign the Fatality Free Friday pledge.

In Townsville, 331 pairs of shoes were put on display in Strand Park to highlight Queensland’s 2009 road toll.

More Fatality Free Friday 2010 news to come including details of individual events.
